Use case: Drone defense on the move

ARDRONIS - Drone defense on the move

Malicious and non-cooperative drones – particularly first person view (FPV), one way attack (OWA) and intelligence gathering drones – continue to represent significant threats to armed forces. These threats apply especially to ground based units operating at the tactical edge against highly capable peer adversaries, often in extremely contested and complex operating environments. The ability to equip tactical ground vehicles with the means to detect, identify, track and disrupt these types of threats is rapidly emerging as a critical requirement for armed forces operating in both permissive and non-permissive environments.

Legacy platforms, such as armored personnel carriers, armored fighting vehicles, command and control vehicles, special operations and fire support vehicles are less likely to be compatible with new, currently available ounter-drone technologies.

Newer platforms often accommodate counter-drone compatibility from the start of the design phase. However, integration of state-of-the-art counter-drone technologies into large fleets of legacy vehicles can pose significant challenges. Limited power supplies, space constraints, weight, varying dynamic range, electromagnetic interference and high costs present major hurdles to retrofitting projects.

Rohde & Schwarz solution

In August 2025, Rohde & Schwarz unveiled its counterdrone demo vehicle specifically designed to overcome retrofitting hurdles and help customers understand how best to upgrade their tactical ground vehicles with stateof‑the-art ARDRONIS systems.

The demo vehicle shows solutions for questions such as:

  • How does the counter-drone system affect the weight distribution of a vehicle?
  • How can antennas be positioned to reduce interference?
  • Is an additional generator required for cooling?

The wide range of possibilities the demo vehicle offers:

  • Rohde & Schwarz ARDRONIS equipment for drone detection and mitigation, showing where and how to integrate detection and jamming antennas, power supplies and cooling systems to maximize mission success
  • The capability to operate ARDRONIS systems on the move, having already completed multiple NATO exercises and customer demonstrations across Europe
  • A better understanding of the fine points of integrating onboard counter-drone technologies into legacy vehicles
  • Two operator workstations with up to three detectors and two jamming antennas, an unrealistic setup for a real-world operational vehicle but a configuration that Rohde & Schwarz put together for demonstration purposes to find the best solution for user requirements
  • Experience from NATO’s Technical Interoperability Exercise (TIE) in Latvia, focused on real-world scenarios and countering drones used for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) as well as FPV and OWA missions
  • Successful validation of the new Rohde & Schwarz multiband jammer using the SAPIENT protocol to increase levels of autonomy

Benefits

  • The Rohde & Schwarz demo vehicle helps customers consider how to integrate high-end counter-drone equipment into their vehicles for a range of use cases such as detection, classification, identification and advanced direction finding of drones and their pilots.
  • As a truly plug-and-play solution, the demo vehicle can drive to any training area in Europe and rapidly support standalone or networked counter-drone missions in any environment.
  • The demo vehicle has already supported customer demonstrations in Germany, Denmark, Estonia, Greece, Latvia, Romania and Sweden, providing effective active and reactive jamming and drone defense through signal disruption by simultaneously jamming multiple bands in arbitrary combinations.
