Munich, June 3, 2026 — Memmingen Airport has chosen Rohde & Schwarz to deliver CERTIUM VCS (Voice Communications System) with integrated control of Rohde & Schwarz radios to replace analog equipment and strengthen reliable day-to-day operations. The IP architecture increases availability, integrates smoothly with the airport network and supports efficient coordination for a scalable foundation to meet future needs.
CERTIUM VCS directly controls Rohde & Schwarz radios for air-ground communications. Operationally, the solution equips modern controller working positions (CWPs) for air traffic control and compact CWPs tailored to fire service and operations. A common user interface and standardized procedures support coordination across tower, fire service and operations. The end-to-end IP architecture reduces analog interfaces, simplifies configuration and maintenance, while letting the airport add positions or capabilities with no additional gateways.
As Bavaria´s third-largest airport, Memmingen is growing ever more important as part of the European point-to-point-network. Ongoing modernization supports continued growth and strengthens the airport’s role as a future-ready regional infrastructure asset.
Memmingen Airport’s decision is part of the broader shift to IP based voice communications at German airports. CERTIUM VCS customers benefit from network integration, operational efficiency and multi site coordination. The project uses established cooperation and local expertise in managing critical infrastructure projects at the Rohde & Schwarz Memmingen manufacturing facility. The Rohde & Schwarz Air Traffic Control Systems team in Germany manages system integration and acceptance, with technological support from the VCS organization in Bucharest.
“By combining CERTIUM VCS with direct control of Rohde & Schwarz radios, Memmingen Airport has a coherent IP voice architecture that supports availability, common HMI for air traffic controllers, fire service, operations and easy technical administration with no extra gateways.”
– Marius Münstermann, Vice President Air Traffic Control, Rohde & Schwarz
“By moving to CERTIUM VCS and integrating our existing Rohde & Schwarz radios, we are modernizing the airport´s voice communication infrastructure and replacing legacy analog equipment. The system provides modern controller workstations for the ATC Tower as well as compact positions for fire service and airport operations, supporting the operational requirements of all involved stakeholders. The phased approach and firm timeline until July 2026 give us the planning certainty we need ahead of the busy summer period.” – Julia Baumann, Director of Aviation at Flughafen Memmingen GmbH
