MXO AI Connect Oscilloscope Software

An MCP server for an oscilloscope is software that gives AI assistants and AI agents standardized access to the instrument through the Model Context Protocol (MCP). MCP is an open standard for connecting AI applications to tools and data. Typical functions of such a server include instrument configuration, measurements, SCPI communication, screenshots and documentation search.

The MXO AI Connect is an MCP server for the MXO oscilloscopes and the R&S®ScopeStudio software, developed and tested by Rohde & Schwarz. It enables AI-assisted instrument control and test workflows through a standard MCP interface.

The MXO AI Connect from Rohde & Schwarz gives the assistant access to MXO oscilloscope knowledge and tools. You can ask it to configure measurements, change settings, query results or capture a screenshot without searching for every SCPI command yourself. For a request such as "Decode this CAN bus and trigger on frame ID 0x123", the assistant identifies the relevant commands and executes them on the instrument.

Yes, the MXO AI Connect is a free software download for every supported MXO oscilloscope. No license key is required. Any costs for the AI client or language model depend on the provider you choose.

The MXO 3, MXO 4, MXO 5 and MXO 5C oscilloscopes support AI control through MCP with the free MXO AI Connect software. The MXO AI Connect also works with the R&S®ScopeStudio software and includes the MXO help content and SCPI command information. MCP solutions from other test and measurement vendors and open-source projects can differ in supported instruments, available tools and access to vendor documentation.

The MXO AI Connect works with AI assistants that run in MCP-compatible clients supporting HTTP or STDIO, such as Cursor, Claude Code or GitHub Copilot in agent mode. Because it is based on the open Model Context Protocol, the MXO AI Connect is not tied to a specific large language model. You choose the AI client and model, cloud-hosted or locally deployed, to fit your organization's development environment, security requirements and workflow.

The MXO AI Connect runs on Windows and macOS. Linux is not supported. You install it on the computer that connects to the oscilloscope via LAN or USB.

To use the MXO AI Connect, you need:

• a supported MXO oscilloscope (MXO 3, MXO 4, MXO 5 or MXO 5C) or the R&S®ScopeStudio software;
• a Windows or macOS computer connected to the instrument via LAN or USB, with a VISA library installed;
• an MCP-compatible AI client with HTTP or STDIO support and access to a language model; and
• the free MXO AI Connect download.

Yes, when the AI assistant is connected through the MXO AI Connect. General AI models may not reliably know the MXO command set, so the MXO AI Connect provides up-to-date Rohde & Schwarz instrument help, SCPI command information and direct control of the instrument.

Instead of searching the programming manual, you describe the measurement or configuration you need. The assistant retrieves the relevant documentation, determines the matching commands and executes them through the MCP tools.

Yes. An AI assistant connected through the MXO AI Connect can help create and refine oscilloscope automation.

For example, you can ask it to develop an instrument setup and test the configuration on a connected MXO oscilloscope. The assistant then translates the working control sequence into SCPI or Python code and refines the script based on the measurement results. Depending on the AI model, it can also adapt the code to other languages such as C, C++, C# or MATLAB.

Documentation lets an AI assistant read about commands, but an MCP connection also lets it run them. With the MXO AI Connect, the assistant can execute commands on the instrument and check the result.

The MXO AI Connect provides the MXO help content in a structured, searchable form. The assistant does not have to interpret PDF files and web pages or cross-check several online sources. This means less searching, which can save time and tokens.

You can verify every result directly on the instrument. Settings the AI assistant changes through the MXO AI Connect appear on the oscilloscope display, and the assistant can capture a screenshot for you to check. Most MCP-compatible AI clients also let you switch the MCP server or individual tools on or off and can ask for your approval before an action runs.

No. The MXO AI Connect itself does not need an internet connection. It runs locally, keeps the MXO help content on your computer and does not instruct the AI assistant to look for information online. Internet access is only needed if your AI client or language model is cloud-based or if your prompt leads the assistant to search online, for example for a topic the help index does not cover. With a locally deployed model, the whole workflow can run in an isolated lab network.

Yes. The MXO AI Connect runs locally in your environment and connects to the MXO oscilloscopes or the R&S®ScopeStudio software over LAN or USB using VISA and SCPI. It does not require an AI model hosted by Rohde & Schwarz: you select and manage the AI client and language model yourself.

How prompts, screenshots and measurement data are processed beyond the local MCP server therefore depends on the AI client, model and IT environment you choose.
