Rohde & Schwarz to present enhanced RelayCaster for live content contribution over public Internet at NAB Show in New York

Premier transmitter, test and measurement, and broadcast studio equipment manufacturer Rohde & Schwarz will introduce the latest version of its RelayCaster to the U.S. market at the NAB Show New York (Booth #N232) this month. Rohde & Schwarz will also display the latest versions of its ingest and playout platform R&S VENICE, mastering workstation R&S CLIPSTER 6, and A/V monitoring and multi-viewing solution, R&S PRISMON.


Columbia, Md., October 10, 2017 — Rohde & Schwarz executives will be available to provide guidance on any topics related to the FCC repack, which leads to a transition to new channel assignments for approximately 1000 TV stations across the U.S. During this phase, Rohde & Schwarz transmitters provide a smooth transition to ATSC 3.0. The R&S THU9evo liquid-cooled UHF transmitter family offers energy efficiency values of up to 43 percent for ATSC.

Being shown for the first time in the U.S. since acquiring the technology of Motama GmbH earlier this year, Rohde & Schwarz will introduce the latest versions of RelayCaster and CodecCaster to the U.S. market at NAB New York. RelayCaster enables live content contribution over public IP networks, and CodecCaster provides high-density, live transcoding.

The new version of RelayCaster features integrated SDI/HDMI input and encoding – features which add value to this cost-efficient, live content contribution platform. With RelayCaster, the reliability of contributing and distributing live content via unmanaged networks is significantly improved, as packet loss issues are more efficiently resolved. With RelayCaster, there’s no need for expensive, dedicated links or contracts with CDN service providers. RelayCaster can distribute content across any distance, to any place with Internet access. With optional encryption, data streams are protected between all senders and receivers. RelayCaster targets live content producers and aggregators as well as live content service operators and OTT operators.

CodecCaster is a turn-key system for real-time transcoding, offering high-performance and high-quality IP-based format conversion and bitrate reduction for MPEG transport streams. CodecCaster fully supports transcoding and transrating to multiple bitrates for adaptive streaming for MPEG-2, AVC/H.264 and HEVC/H.265. The output of DVB compliant and OTT streams is also supported. In addition, audio pass through and audio transcoding for AAC, MPEG audio and Dolby Digital Plus is available.

Also on display will be the new generation of R&S VENICE 4K media server. R&S VENICE represents a radically different approach to media processing and channel playout within transformational broadcast environments. It enables immediate application within existing SDI baseband architectures whilst also future-proofing them by offering the flexibility and sustainability of IP-based broadcast infrastructure and workflows.

Rohde & Schwarz has developed R&S VENICE with interoperability in mind. The company is committed to using open standards that offer new features, functionality and services rather than being locked in devices and products. R&S VENICE allows communication and integration via the framework for interoperable media services (FIMS) standard. Also, incorporating open standards rather than proprietary APIs grants interoperability with a wide range of third party vendor equipment.

In developing R&S VENICE, Rohde & Schwarz created a new standard in on-air reliability. The system’s implementation of Rohde & Schwarz’s proprietary virtual storage access technology enables uninterrupted broadcast operations with no performance degradation in the event of single or multiple simultaneous failures. When combined with R&S SpycerBox Cellstorage systems supported by IBM Spectrum Scale file system, the virtual storage access technology provides multiple layers of data redundancy from low-cost to enterprise-scale configurations capable of covering multiple system failures seamlessly. Rohde & Schwarz’s modular storage approach enables users to select from different bandwidth, capacity and redundancy levels and for these levels to be modified in the future.

Rohde & Schwarz will also demonstrate its R&S CLIPSTER 6 workstation at NAB New York. A complete hardware and software turnkey finishing system, R&S CLIPSTER 6 equips users with a robust toolset, from capturing to mastering in several digital distribution formats, for the post production of film and broadcast projects. It is considered the gold standard workstation for mastering and distributing feature films and episodic TV. R&S CLIPSTER 6 is a fully software-defined solution for future-proof extensibility. It enables a multi-platform approach for playout, contribution and distribution from a single platform.

Also on hand at the show will be R&S PRISMON - a software-based solution for monitoring and multi-viewing of audio/video content for broadcast and streaming services. In addition to supporting classical and IP-based SDI signals, it offers a comprehensive set of protocols for OTT/streaming scenarios. R&S PRISMON offers broadcast and media service providers a single platform for convergent monitoring and multiviewing – from channel playout and contribution networks to distribution environments (e.g. terrestrial transmitter sites, satellite up-/downlink stations, IPTV backbone hubs, CDNs). Hardware and cloud-based deployments of R&S PRISMON enjoy the same set of capabilities and features.
