R&S®SMW-K74 MIMO Fading/Routing

Equipped with the R&S®SMW-K74 option, the R&S®SMW200A offers enhanced MIMO fading capabilities. It covers baseband signal generation as well as MIMO channel simulation (incl. correlations) for higher-order MIMO scenarios such as 2x2, 4x2, 2x4, 3x3, 4x4 or 8x2.

The system configuration dialog of the R&S®SMW200A GUI allows flexible setup of the instrument. By selecting the desired MIMO configuration the block diagram of the R&S®SMW200A, users can easily adapt the vector signal generator to the task at hand.

Application examples

2x2 MIMO (1x2x2 configuration)

Generation 2x2 MIMO signals – whether for WLAN 802.11n/ac, HSPA+, LTE or LTE-Advanced – is an easy task with the R&S®SMW200A.

Dual-cell/dual-band HSPA with 2x2 MIMO (2x2x2 configuration)

3GPP defines dual-cell HSPA operation (DC-HSPA). Using the R&S®SMW-K74 option, the R&S®SMW200A can be configured to generate both cells of the HSPA signal and to simulate a 2x2 MIMO fading channel for each of the two cells. The settings for the two TX antennas for each cell can be made via the individual baseband blocks of the block diagram.

LTE-A carrier aggregation (two carriers) with 2x2 MIMO

The use of a combination of carrier aggregation and MIMO technology for further enhancing throughput is under discussion for 3GPP LTE Release 12. The R&S®MW200A makes it easy to generate an LTE-A carrier aggregation scenario with two carriers and 2x2 MIMO. Using the “coupled sources” feature, the LTE baseband signal can be conveniently configured for all LTE-A carriers and TX antennas via a common configuration dialog. Signals are automatically synchronized.

4x4 MIMO (1x4x4 configuration)

A single R&S®SMW200A can generate baseband signals and simulate MIMO channels for 4x4 MIMO tests (as required e.g. for WLAN or LTE). Two RF signals are directly generated by the R&S®SMW200A. The other two RF signals can be generated via two additional R&S®SGS100A signal sources that seamlessly integrate into the operating concept of the R&S®SMW200A: configuration runs solely via the GUI of the R&S®SMW200A.

LTE 8x2 MIMO (1x8x2 configuration)

TD-LTE requires simulation of up to eight TX antennas and an 8x2 MIMO channel. This is another easy task for the R&S®SMW200A. Only one instrument is needed for this application.
