As the signal structure of most GNSS signals is well known and documented, false GNSS signals can be generated and transmitted by an attacker. These spoofing attacks typically cause a GNSS receiver to compute an incorrect position and timing information – making navigation practically useless.
Jamming and spoofing events occur very frequently and have become a major threat to the GNSS signal integrity over the last years. In 2020 alone, several thousand jamming and spoofing incidents have been reported and, in the meantime, the problem has also been recognized as an enormous economic risk.
