    The R&S®UMS120 is the modular version based on the main unit (box) of the R&S®UMS100. Its components and antennas can be combined as desired to yield a system optimized to the customer's requirements.

    Key elements are the new, compact outdoor R&S® UMS100/120 radiomonitoring systems. They automatically monitor all frequency ranges, RF radiation, or transmitters of interest.

    All R&S UMS®100/120 systems are managed and remote controlled by a monitoring control center (MCC). The connection to the MCC can be set up via a LAN/WAN or wirelessly using mobile radio data service based on GSM or CDMA, for example. The powerful R&S® ARGUS or R&S® ARGUS-UMS platform runs in the control center to provide easy access to all available remote monitoring stations (R&S® UMS100/120).

    Besides direct interactive access to the R&S® UMS100/120, the preferred mode of operation is automatic measurement. Once a measurement has been defined, it will run automatically, either continuously or within selected timeslots, without any further operator activity being required. Due to the highly sophisticated client-server architecture of the software, it is not necessary to have a permanent network connection between the control center and the monitoring stations, thus reducing operating costs.

    With the help of a user-friendly configuration wizard, measurement tasks can be defined very quickly. Special emphasis is given to the criteria triggering an alarm: Either fixed thresholds or easily defined reference spectra can be used for detecting the following:

    • Overshoot – where a new signal has appeared or an existing one has been increased
    • Undershoot – where a signal has disappeared or an existing one has been decreased

    In the automatic mode, the R&S® UMS100/120 systems immediately compare the live measurements with the user-defined reference spectra. If one of the alarm criteria is met, an alarm message is created.

    Depending on the operating preferences, the control center can either routinely poll the R&S® UMS100/120 to request measurement results or wait for alarm messages automatically generated and forwarded by the R&S® UMS100/120 after a suspicious signal has been detected.

    The control center is equipped with the R&S® ARGUS (-UMS) software, which provides the following:

    • Powerful tools for managing remote R&S® UMS100/120 systems
    • Manual interactive measurements
    • Automatic measurements and evaluations
  • Evaluation of results

    Measurement results can be saved and displayed as a table or graph. All alarm messages created by the R&S® UMS100/120 are listed in the general log file in the control center, as can be seen above (new entries marked in red).

    When an alarm is generated, the operator in the control center must decide which action is to be taken, for example:

    • Use the R&S® UMS100/120 to listen to the demodulated audio frequency
    • Perform dedicated measurements on the signal that triggered the alarm
    • Send special monitoring vehicles equipped with direction finders to the area of interest

    The R&S® UMS100/120 systems have been designed as very cost-efficient, compact, robust, autonomous monitoring systems. They reliably detect signals with a minimum duration of typ. 1 to 2 seconds. They also show the presence of GSM mobiles but are not designed to detect fast frequency hoppers – this will be the domain of special devices also available from Rohde & Schwarz.

  • Finding "unwanted signals"

    The screen shot shows the result of a live measurement (red). A user-defined limit line is superimposed (green). The overshoot at 95.5 MHz is clearly visible, where a "new" carrier has been detected. Depending on the configuration, this can trigger an alarm in the control center and/or automatically initiate in-depth analysis of the signal.
